Get involved
The Hertfordshire Gardens Trust runs on the energy and enthusiasm of volunteers!
Maybe you love digging through archives, or you’re brilliant at organising events, or you’re keen to understand more about the impact of planning applications on the county’s gardens and designed landscapes. Perhaps you just want to help out at garden visits or write the occasional article. Whatever your skills and interests, and however much time you can spare, there’s almost certainly something here that’ll suit you.
We’re a friendly bunch, and we’ll make sure you’re supported. Some people commit to regular roles, others dip in and out as life allows – both are valuable to us.
Have a look at the opportunities below, or if nothing quite fits, but you’d still like to be involved, just get in touch. We’re always happy to chat.
Research
To truly conserve, protect and enjoy gardens and designed landscapes, we must know their stories. Research is the essential first step! Hertfordshire Gardens Trust Research Team holds regular meetings and enjoys many field trips.
Our Research Team is currently tracking down Walled Kitchen Gardens across Hertfordshire, and we’ve already identified 500 from Victorian maps that need investigating. You’ll get to join research meetings, go on field trips, and help uncover stories that have been hidden for over a century.

Conservation
We’re looking for people to train and work alongside Kate Harwood, our Conservation Officer, before she retires in 2027. It’s a fantastic chance to learn how the planning system works and how we protect threatened gardens and designed landscapes. If you’re interested in making a real difference to what gets built where, contact conservation@hertsgardenstrust.org.uk
Events
Trustees
We have an exciting opportunity to join our active team of Trustees to help steer the Hertfordshire Gardens Trust and develop new areas, from working with schools, to developing a grant scheme. If you are interested to find out more, please contact chair@hertsgardenstrust.org.uk
