Conserving our Landscape Heritage

The Conservation and Planning Officer’s  role is to encourage conservation and enhancement of Hertfordshire’s historic parks and gardens, both those recognized as of national and international importance by being placed on the Historic England Register of Historic Parks and Gardens of special historic interest in England, and those of Local Historic Interest.

We work with The Gardens Trust (a statutory consultee on historic designed landscape), Historic England, other amenity bodies, local planning authorities throughout Hertfordshire, owners and managers of sites and the public.

As part of The Gardens Trust we are their experts in the historic landscapes of Hertfordshire and help inform comments when GT is consulted on development on Registered sites.  HGT also comments  on all applications affecting our  200 plus historic parks and gardens , whether it is within the site or within the setting of such a site.

In addition we comment on the Local Plan documents, produced by Local Planning Authorities, and help these authorities with the scope and detail of their Local Lists of Historic Parks and Gardens. Key to this are the Local Lists produced by HGT and available here. Contained within the Local Lists  will be Statements of Significance which summarise the key elements of their  importance.

We are available to help developers, owners and planners with advice, based on the detailed knowledge built up on the historic designed landscapes of Hertfordshire by HGT over many years. Where possible we encourage the development of Conservation Management Plans for each site to ensure continuity of informed  practice.
