The day offers a chance to learn about the intense interest in botany and plant collecting in London in the late 17th and early 18th centuries, including the pre-eminent collections of the Duchess of Beaufort at Beaufort House, Queen Mary at Hampton Court, and Bishop Henry Compton at Fulham Palace, where the event is hosted. Many of these collectors made herbariums, parts of which found their way into the collections of Sir Hans Sloane – and thus formed the basis for the foundation of the British Museum in 1759. Attendees will have the chance to visit the ongoing restoration of Bishop Compton’s plantings with Fulham Palace Head Gardener Lucy Hart.
