A meeting has been arranged at Hertfordshire Archives and Local Studies, County Hall to discuss the setting up of a new group to research Walled Kitchen Gardens in Hertfordshire. We know of many still existing in the county (although they may not now be used as kitchen gardens) but there must be others which have not yet come to our attention. We need to compile a list and begin to discover as much as we can about them – the staff and the plants they grew, how they evolved and when and if they were abandoned, the use of hot houses and the structure of their walls. There are many different aspects to this fascinating topic. We intend to meet at HALS initially, but later in the year a visit will be arranged to a well known kitchen garden and some talks will be given via zoom. The photo is of the kitchen garden at Amersfort, nr Berkhamsted.
Please come along to HALS on 13 August to discuss the varying ways in which you may be able to participate. Please let Barbara Kiln know that you intend to join us by sending a message to zoomevents@hertsgardenstrust.org.uk.
